7 Habits To Avoid Acidic Foods That Cause Heartburn

Heartburn is a pain sensation in the upper part of the abdomen caused by acid reflux. It is caused by reflux of the acid from the stomach into the esophagus (the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach). Acid secretion in the stomach is necessary in order to activate the enzymes that are responsible for protein digestion. The acid, however, escapes through a valve like structure called the lower esophageal sphincter. Natural relief of heartburn centers, most of all, on preventing the acid reflux through natural habits such as avoiding acidic foods that cause heartburn:

Avoid large meals. Large meals causes the inside pressure of the stomach to increase and increases the risk of food reflux (acid reflux /GERD) into the esophagus, causing heartburn and pain.

Avoid certain foods like chocolate and mints.

Avoid food that is high in protein and difficult to digest like red meat and fried chicken.

Avoid fried or fatty foods.Avoid soda beverages that cause gas build up in the stomach and belching, which hence facilitate acid reflux like : Orange juice, lemon, lemonade, grapefruit juice, cranberry juice, tomato.

Minimize use of coffee and tea that are known to activate acid secretions.

Foods that help with heartburn: There are some food types, however, that can help with heartburn.

Bananas are a natural antacid. They do cause, however, some indigestion. Other natural alternatives are marshmallow root and aloe vera.

Dairy food and drinks, especially milk, are known to help control acidity. Some examples include milk, ice cream, and yogurt. As previously discussed in our forum, other natural remedies for heartburn include: chewing gum, baking soda, licorice, slippery elm, and olive oil.

Extra virgin olive oil has been in the folklore of many Mediterranean cultures as a natural remedy for acid reflux, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastritis, gastric ulcer and indigestion.

A new dietary supplement combines traditional antacids and olive oil to create a naturally enhanced antacid: Episolve GI. Episovle GI is new dietary supplement for acid reflux support. It is naturally enhanced antacid. It is made of calcium carbonate suspended in naturally occurring olive oil. It is not a short acting antacid, but rather a medium-acting antacid. It is composed of a SUSPENSION of olive oil and calcium carbonate. It reduces the acid load on the esophageal gastric junction. The olive oil floats to the top of the gastric content and the refluxed gastric content and protects the mucosa by creating a barrier between the esophageal mucosa and the stomach acid.
